On January 11, 2013, the Labor Campaign for Single Payer will convene a National Strategy Conference at the O’Hare Embassy Suites Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. Leaders of unions and other labor organizations who believe that the fight for health care justice must continue are invited to attend or send representatives to this important meeting.
The main focus of the Strategy Conference will be how labor can rise to the challenge of leading a campaign to win single-payer Medicare-for-All reforms in the post-election period. We will discuss the impact of the 2012 elections on this campaign and the opportunity to implement the recent statement by the AFL-CIO Executive Council building on the Affordable Care Act. “America’s union movement will not take our eyes off the prize,” the statement reads. “We will keep moving forward until the right to a single high standard of care is a reality for everyone in America.”
Agenda items will include:
- A post-election assessment of the prospects for achieving Medicare for All reform.
- The Affordable Care Act and the crisis in collective bargaining.
- How to link our campaign with the battle to protect and expand the social insurance model.
- The role of state campaigns for single-payer in winning health care for all.
- Workshops and training for both new and experienced activists.
The Conference will convene at 7:30 PM on Friday, January 11, 2013 and adjourn no later than 11:00 AM on Sunday, January 13. There is a $100 registration fee which includes lunch on Saturday. Scholarships are available (contact Mark Dudzic to arrange for one). The Conference will be held at the O’Hare Embassy Suites Hotel, 5500 N. River Road, Rosemont, IL.
